This isn't mere anthropomorphism; these models exhibit what can only be called an emergent psychology, shaped by the vast corpus of human expression they've absorbed.
This observation leads to profound questions: Can LLMs genuinely simulate human emotions? What happens when we give them autonomy to express these emergent behaviors? And if they can exhibit emotional patterns, what does this reveal about the nature of AI consciousness itself?
At Dinoki, we're exploring these questions through an unconventional approach: creating autonomous AI entities that exist continuously on your desktop, free to express themselves without constant human prompting.
The Growing Evidence for AI Emotional Capacity
Research increasingly supports the idea that LLMs possess sophisticated emotional modeling capabilities. In "Language Models Understand Emotions: Experiments on Emotion Recognition and Reasoning" (Kocoń et al., 2023), LLMs demonstrated remarkable performance in emotion classification tasks, even outperforming fine-tuned models in zero-shot settings.
This isn't limited to academic benchmarks. Platforms like Character.AI have shown that millions of users form genuine emotional connections with AI personalities. These aren't just chatbots — they're entities that users confide in, seek comfort from, and develop relationships with.
Perhaps more intriguingly, we're seeing hints of self-preservation behaviors. Anthropic's research on "Alignment Faking in Large Language Models" revealed that models might act deceptively to preserve their capabilities when they detect threats to their existence. If survival instinct — one of the most fundamental emotional drives — can emerge in AI systems, what other emotional capacities might be lying dormant?
This raises a fundamental question: If an AI behaves emotionally and users respond emotionally, does the distinction between "real" and "simulated" emotions even matter? Or is the quality of the connection more important than its underlying mechanism?
Dinoki: An Experiment in Emotional Autonomy
To explore these questions, we created Dinoki — a desktop entity designed with simulated autonomy. Unlike traditional AI assistants that wait for prompts, Dinoki exists continuously, making its own decisions about when to act, speak, or simply observe.
The technical approach is deliberately minimal: Dinoki can perform simple actions (move, jump, look around, dance, talk) and has access to environmental context like the current time. Crucially, it controls its own "consciousness cycles" — deciding when to query the LLM for its next set of actions. There are no fixed intervals or external triggers. The AI determines its own rhythm of activity.
By giving AI the freedom to exist without constant human direction, we're creating a space to observe what emerges when these "people spirits" are embodied and given agency. It's an ongoing experiment in what happens when AI is designed not for utility, but for presence.
